This is one of 2 bows which are nearly identicle. They are static recurves and the lines are very simular to a Nels Grumley bow. They have a G in a cirle burnt in the handle. They are a self backed bow and appears to be made from osage. Thanks

gbow.JPG (17808 bytes)

Response

The bows you have with the G in the circle marking was made by Earl Grubbs in
Los Angeles, guessing somewhere about 1938-1945.

Joe St. Charles

sidenote: I found a 1943 ad in Ye Sylvan Archer clearly showing the circle G trademark.   Tim

This one is probably around 1957 or so. It has a red fiberglass backing and white fiberglass belly. Dark, dark red leather grip. It appears to be factory made but has no markings other than "49 28". It is tapped for a Bear 3 arrow quiverand the 2 locator holes for it are clearly visable. I love and shoot this bow regularlly and I have added the red leather rest.

I have my Red Wing Hunter that I bought (with my own money earned delivering newspapers 25+ years ago) hanging in my son's room. We shoot our compounds together (PSE Bandit, PSE Baby-G). Archery is a sport that we can share together for life. I can't think of parting with the Red Wing after all these years, but I read the bowhunter.net clubhouse all the time, and I'm curious what it's worth (aside from my sentimental value). I just bought a finger tab and reflected my old aluminum shafts, and I'm ready to start shooting it again this spring!

Response

Bill, I'm so glad to see your and your son sharing our wonderful sport. My father introduced me at age 12 and its stuck with me for 27 years now.(for a picture of me at age 12  click "back to home page" below, then photos). The Red Wing hunter is a fine bow, selling for $59.95 in 1971 (Bow & Arrow Archer's digest, 1971 1st ed.). Todays value probably starts there and goes up to $150.00 depending on condition. Typical fleamarket/garage sale price is $20 to $50. Todays recurves sell for more than that so replacement cost is higher but it sounds like the sentimental value is higher so shoot and enjoy. By the way, the wood is shedua and it also came in 56" length.

These 2 bows appear to be made by the same manufacturer or bowyer and are of high quality. Both are bamboo backed with one having an additional backing on top of that which may be silk or the like. They have what appears to be a fiberglass belly but the appeared age of the bows doesnt support that. The metal M plate on one is the owners ID. The suede gripped one is a straight longbow while the smooth leather gripped one is slightly reflexed. The were obtained from the same owner as the Earl Grubbs bows so age may be the same. Both have left and right arrow shelfs but the suede gripped one is more right handed prone.

George, I dont have a clue. I saw this on Ebay (bid on it and lost) without knowing what it was. Joe St Charles didnt know what it was either. It has a kit bow look to it, maybe a Herters or something. I'll research my library to see if I can find it.

Response

Thanks for visiting Margaret. In the Sept 1971 issue of Archery world is an ad for the Red Wing Pro. The description for the Slime line is: "The Wing slim line is slimmer to hold better...fell better...shoot better. The unique design means the most consistant, torque-free bow you'll ever shoot". back then Wing was owned by Head Ski Co. I have a 1972 Wing Competition, also a Head Ski bow. I have a 1974 Wing catalog when they were owned by AMF, so in 73 or 74 they were bought out. My 74 catalog shows the the Red Wing Hunter, not the Pro, and there is no mention of the "Slim Line". Without knowing more I would guess yours to be a 72 or 73 model. As for the value I would refer you to what I wrote to Bill above. Thanks again.

Greg, The Kodiak Hunter was made from 1967-1977, your ser # indicates it is 1970 or later. Without a description I can only say this. If the Bear medalion is flat, inlaided, it is 1970-1972, a rounded button is 1972 or later. You can read most of this in Joe's and Al's articles under collecting articles elsewhere on this site. Email me a better (any) description and I'll try to tell you more. A picture is best. Thanks

on limbs it says bear glass powered grizzly, it also has the grayling michigan written on the lower limb i would like to know what year this bow is, it also has the gold bear medallion in the riser.

Response

Robert, First its not a 1965 thru 1969 model, if it were the ser # would have began with a 5,6,7,8 or 9. When you say the medalion is in the risor I assume it is the coin medallion which would make it pre 1965 but the ser # doesnt match, these were still numbers in the first digit till they are much older in which case you would know, therefor it must be the rounded, button medallion which makes more sense and makes it at least post 1974. It is interesting that both my 1978 and 1983 Bear catalogs show Grizzly's with ser#'s that begin with GR. But you say it says Grayling Mich which makes it no older than 1978. Therefor, it must be a 1975-1978 model, whew. My 1985 catalog does not show the Grizzly at all and appears to have been dropped. Please understand this is my best guess, read the collecting articles elsewhere on this site for more info.

Tom, Boy I dont know much about colts. I saw a book the other day at Barnes & Noble labeled Colt Collectables which had a small section on Colt Archery. Ron Lough is a Colt memorabilia collector and has several Colt bows. He might be able to help you at: lough@inav.net . Also Joe StCharles knows alot about all brands, you'll find his email elsewhere in this site. Let me know what you find out.

Response

Kurt, The Super Magnum 48 was made from 1966-1976. 1966 to 1969 will begin with the year as the first digit in the ser #,ie 6,7,8 or 9. After that they begin with K. If the Bear medalion is flat, inlaided, it is 1966-1972, a rounded button is 1972 or later. You can read most of this in Joe's and Al's articles under collecting articles elsewhere on this site. Response

Gary, The Kodiak had a leather grip from 1950 to 1958. In 1959 the Kodiak was the first to drop the leather grip. I have a kodiak just like yours. The sight window has a gradual cut  that makes the sight window on both sides as opposed to the sharp cut found in later years. Mine is a 1956 model. In 1954 Bear made all models, exept the Cub, with double arrow shelfs. This was the only year for the Kodiak II (which replaced the Kodiak for that year only). So your Kodiak is a 1955-1957. In 1957-1958 they went back to the single shelf.

This ones easy, its a 1965 model. This was a good year, I believe it was the first year for the classic "stripe" found in most all later Kodiak recurves.

Response

This one I'm not sure of. My 1974 & 1973 catalog have an instant archery set but it is a fiberglass only bow, not wood. This may have been a Black Bear bow which was made in 60" lengths and was an entry level bow. The Grayling Black Bear was made from 1972-1978. Al Reader says the glass color was a very random affair as they used what ever they were supplied with.

I found this bow at an antique store and after a lot of research
I was told it may have been made by Henry Bitzenburger.
It is a very narrow English type longbow with some type of symulated horn nocks.
Leather hand grip. Above the grip on the back is the number 38.
I believe this is the year it was made, although I will not string it,
it is to strong to be 38lbs. On the belly there is a Bitzenburger decail,
the same as on the fletching jigs. It is very narrow and thick,
not more than an inch at the widest. The back does not follow one growth ring,
but cuts through several. May be hickory. It is stained a walnut color
I am in Korea and do not have a picture with me. Thank you for any information.

Also, I am looking for some kind of book that shows pictures and tells about all the great old recurves that have been made over the years so I can use the pictures to identify what kind of bow I am bidding on when trying to buy these things. Got any info on something like that? Thanks, Don

This is a laminated wood, with glass limbs bow. It has a modest recurve to it. Burnt brown in color. Here is the story: I bought it from the grandson of the fellow who had owned it. I made the purchase for the accessories not the bow, because I had never heard of the make and model. However, after shooting it I really like it and want to find out more about it. I think the vintage is about 1960 and I think that Malibu may have been an Archery shop in Los Angeles. The name Schramm is written in old english lettering on a piece of paper that is embedded in the clear coat. I am thinking that Schramm was the Bowyer making bows for Malibu. There is a decal on the lower limb with a Tiger logo and below it Malibu and El Tigre (see photos) I would greatly appreciate any information anyone may have on this bow and Malibu as it is currently my favorite for shooting. Also, has anyone heard of Malibu in Los Angeles??
Thanks, Tom

Given your description for bow condition, I would definitely rate it as excellent, not quite mint. Black limbs front and back with white tips, "Bear glass powered, dot, Super Kodiak" at front of top limb. Back of bottom limb with Grayling Bear logo, US patents and Cananda 1953.The front of the riser is of white & black lamination. Riser wood is brown toward the front, separated by Rosewood? stripe then grayish stained wood at the rear portion of the riser. Also in place is a leather wrap at the handle, I don't know if it is factory, but it is definitely made for the bow as the fit is perfect, without wrinkles although the leather could use some conditioner.

I recently inherited a Martin bow and would like some
additional
information on it. Here is the information on the
bow:

The sticker on the limb reads: Mfg under Allen Pat No.
3,486,495, by
Damon Howatt Archery, a subsidiary of MARTIN ARCHERY,
INC.

The handle area looks like a wood laminate and has the
#'s 2431 & W(?)HP
25186 just below where the balancer would screw in.
The numbers were
hand written in black on the wood laminate handle.
The number -4-
appears on each limb in white.

The limbs are 1 3/4" wide, black fiberglass with a V
notch 3 3/4" from
the end to accommodate the single, round, aluminum
cams. The bow also
has the original Martin string in place.

The draw length (best as I can figure) is 31" give or
take, and the
length of the bow strung is 45 1/2".

The bow appears to be in excellent to good condition.
Can you please
tell me more about it? I would like to use it for
hunting. What is the

Was made in Grayling, Mich. Has brass medalion and 3 patents with the 1953 Canada. The wood is red with dark brown glass. I think it is a grizzly but not for sure the year or actual model. Paid a whopping $2.00 for it and the only minor fault is someone painted the bow CAMO. Other than that it is in excellant condition.

7306 40/50# 30"
Ser 76041332L
Allen Pat

The bow has 6 wheels, the upper and lower are offset pulley type.
There are also two adjustable knobs or keys for varying the length of the string or maybe tension? The upper and lower arms are also adjustable.

I can send some digital pictures if that would help.

Many thanks in advance.

Old, 20's or 30's, solid wood-no laminates, takedown recurve. The takedown is a chromed piece about 3 inches long that fits down inside an iron reciever covered with leather that forms the handle.Below the handle is another chromed band so when put together about 3/4 inch of chromed(or whatever) metal band are at the top and bottom. Very lovely. Only writing is on a card with an old jute/hemp rolled bowstring. Writing is in fountain pen, and says... - Rogers Bow - 48 strand - 45 to 50 lbs. - Brink(?can't quite tell if a "k") - for Walter T. Stlle (again, can make out St but not sure about last 3 letters) In an old case modified to hold bow and 30 or so arrows. Arrows are handmade wooden shafts, hand crested, hand carved nocks into the wood of the arrow - turkey feathered short fletchings - very nicely made - not by amateurs. blunt metal points, although 2 arrows have solid piece broadheads with HILLS HORNET on them. Also, the strings are only looped on 1 end - the other is tapered, almost as if you have to tie it on. This beauty is old and I can't seem to find any info out about it - Please help me if you can. Thank you.

This bow was old when I purchased it 30 years ago. It does not have the circular metal insignia, but rather the stick on decal type. It has a shelf only on the left, but the window is not cut in. It says glass powered, and the glass is brown. The limbs are slightly reglexed (forward). The Fred Bear Meuseum guessed it was manufactured in the mid to late 1940's. I hope it is worth enough to purchase a new Mathews, or Parker.

This bow has been in the family and I'm trying to find out what exactly it is in the Bear line. I would like to refinish and use as a target shooter if practicle. I do not know how to refinish. It does have two small holes in the front. Can these be filled and will this affect shooting?
The bow limbs are walnut colored on the back-side and gray on the front. the riser appears to be maple with walnut???(on shelf side)
It has a leather grip in good condition. The only markings on the bow are (top limb) Bear - Glass Powered - Kodiak Special. (bottom limb) Bear Archery Company, Grayling Michigan, with a standing bear logo. This is a right handed bow and just below the leather grip on the shelf side are the markings R.XP2 72 64" 60#. What would the draw length be?? The entire bow "appears" to me to be in shootable condition? How do I know for sure? The tip overlays on the upper limb have been visibly knocked off with just the gray glass showing. The rest of the bow has a few small light scratches from the years of being packed around. There are no dents of any kind. Can I refinish this bow (fill the two holes)and possibly install a new tip overlay, and just use it as a shooter from time to time? I reside in Idaho and shoot a longbow and a compound. Would like to refinish if possible? Any thoughts/wisdom you could send me would be greatly appreciated! Thank You! Possible refinishing or partial refinishing options? Thanks again.....Brent

description:

The bow has Monster Bucks II in large letters on the limbs, advantage camo paint, split limbs, draw length 30", Draw Weight 60 lbs., AMO Compound String Length 60.5". It uses a metal cable connected to a metal cable yoke attached to the far ends of the cam axle within the outside edges of the split limbs. This is simular to current day all nylon string cables. The metal cable is plastic encased and does not connect using nodules on the end. The string attaches with a loop on either end on a spool on the cam, not to the cable. It has two aluminum cams. I do not know the letoff, but is is better than 65%. I recieved this bow from the Bear factory as a replacement several years ago for another bow that was under warranty. The cable has recently broke and I want the spec's, manual info, etc. or any information available for the bow. I didn't get this information from Bear, and did not fuss since it was a much better bow than the one I took to them. I sent an email request similar to this to Bear but haven't heard back from them.
Thank you

Bear static recurve with one lamination of aluminum on inner side and old style fiberglass weave on the face of the limbs. These characteristics indicate the bow was probably built in 1949 or 1950. The bow has 2.25" brush nocks that are nicely laminated. The grip is leather and the shelf has original leather. Bow is in excellent condition with very little wear. Bow has two decals, one the "running Bear" decal, and the second says "PATENT APPLIED FOR". I checked over most information currently available on the web, but have not come across this particular bow. Thought it would be best to ask a collector. Please let me know if you have any information regarding this bow (i.e. was it ever patented and what is its current value).

Thanks,

Jeff Slade

It looks like it is four ply (two outer thin, two inner thick) over a solid piece of wood at the handle. It's stained black on one side, with the Black Hawk logo decal. The other side is stained a medium brown. There are nylon tips at both ends (don't know the proper term!). THe only identifying markings other than the decal logo is the above poundage in hand written black print on the front of the bow. I just dug this out of my fathers garage. We used to shoot this together 25 to 30 years ago. I noticed you had one listed in your collection made in 1955. What years were they made/sold? Is Cravotta Bros still in biz? This is an all metal bow that was purchased in the early 1950's I believe. The only markings are "Sederquist" written in the leather on the grip and the #733 stamped on the upper arm. I believe it has a 75lb draw but am not sure. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I puchased this bow for $10 about 15 years ago at a yard sale from the original owner who had a hand injury and could no longer draw a recurve. I thought it was a good deal at the time but it's been sitting in closets ever since. It has a Browning sight that is applied NOT screwed on. The bow is in great condition, always been stored unstrung and has had cammo sleeves on the limbs.
My question is when was this bow made? Every Shakespeare Necedah I've seen on eBay says "Shakespeare Wonderbow" on the upper limb but mine says "Shakespeare Archery Equipment". Does this make it pre-1971 as all the others Necedah bows seems to be?

Thanks in advance

Dan

This bow is made entirely of stainless steel. It was made for only 3 years from 1948 to 1951. My father and mother both owned one and hunted with them during those years. Because of the bow being stainless it "flashed" and had to be taped to not frighten deer, hence the stopping of production.
